Toronto Coronavirus Diaries – March 26

This was unexpected. I live in the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. A few weeks back, I was planning cottage trips for the upcoming summer. The winter snow had melted away, and we had a few sunny days with temperature up in the double digits. I was spending my downtime by lake Ontario, at the park and at hiking trails.

Life changed here about two weeks ago in mid-March. My home is situated not too far away from the main street. Before Corona, on most nights, I would be able to hear the traffic passing by. Occasionally, I would hear the sound of music from a car passing by the front of my house. That is not the case anymore. Now all I hear is silence. It feels like I’m in cottage country.

This feels like the calm before the storm. It’s getting bad south of the border in New York. They predict it will slowly spread everywhere. The borders are imaginary lines on the map.

The weekend is coming up. I always have plans for the weekend. That is no longer the case. Life seems to be on hold. This is the time of the year where I like to take advantage of the occasional good weather in the evening and have people over for BBQs. That’s not going to happen.

They say over time, one gets used to anything. I haven’t seen my friends in a long time. I stay connected with others over the phone, but it’s not the same as meeting in person. The province of Ontario has ordered all non-essential businesses to close down. I am working my way through the books on my shelf. They are going by fast.

I play music at a downtown restaurant on Saturdays. I don’t see that happening for the next foreseeable future. I haven’t played much in recent days. People work in different ways. This current state of confinement doesn’t inspire creativity in me. I hope that changes.

I am starting this personal blog to share my experience as someone living in the Greater Toronto Area. I don’t understand the full scale of how with will impact lives, but I feel a lot us are thinking about this. I will be posting updates every few days.
